Maximise Your Solar Energy Potential with Battery Storage Solutions

Enhance the efficiency and utilisation of your solar panel system by integrating it with advanced battery storage technologies. Take a significant step towards energy independence with Climate Force’s premium battery solutions.

During periods of high solar production, particularly in the summer, your system may generate more electricity than your home consumes. Ordinarily, this surplus energy would be exported to the local grid in exchange for modest compensation through the Solar Export Guarantee (SEG), available for qualifying MCS-accredited installations. However, with a battery storage system, you can store this excess energy and maximise the benefits of your self-generated electricity.

Many UK energy providers, such as Octopus and EON, offer ‘off-peak’ tariffs, previously known as ‘Economy 7.’ These tariffs, once used primarily for charging electric storage heaters, are now widely used for charging electric vehicles. Additionally, they can be leveraged to charge your battery storage system during off-peak hours with cheaper electricity, which can then be used during peak periods.

Most leading battery storage systems include mobile apps that allow you to monitor and manage your system remotely, set timers for off-peak charging, and optimise your energy use with ease.

Energy storage terminology

Usable capacity

Capacity is quoted in kWh of storage power. Batteries do not fully discharge to ensure there’s no damage caused to the battery. Usable capacity is the practical amount of power your battery will deliver.

Power Output

Power output is the amount of power that can be delivered at any one time. It is the rate at which the battery will discharge. This is important to know to avoid drawing power from the grid during heavy usage.

Cycles

A cycle is one complete discharge of the battery. This is linked to the warranty period, which is usually quoted in years and / or number of cycles.

Battery Technology

Lithium Ion and Lead Acid are the two most popular battery technologies. The key difference is the depth of discharge, lifespan and price is lower for lead acid technology batteries.

Solar and battery systems and power cuts

Most solar and battery systems are designed to be grid tied, therefore won’t work in the event of a power cut. However, if this feature is key to your requirements, Climate Force will design this feature into your system.

Battery Storage FAQs

How much does a battery storage system cost?

Battery costs vary depending on capacity and brand. A typical 10kWh system costs £6,000-£8,000 fully installed. We provide transparent pricing with detailed ROI calculations during your free survey.

How long does a battery last?

Modern LFP batteries last 10-15 years or 6,000-10,000 cycles. With typical daily use, this means 15-20+ years of reliable service.

Can I charge my battery from off-peak electricity?

Yes! All our battery systems support smart charging from off-peak tariffs like Octopus Agile, EON Drive, or any Economy 7-style tariff. This can save hundreds of pounds annually.

Will a battery work with my existing solar panels?

In most cases, yes! We can retrofit battery storage to existing solar installations. During your free survey, we’ll assess your current system and recommend the best battery solution.

Do I need solar panels to have a battery?

No! Batteries can be installed without solar panels and charged purely from off-peak grid electricity. However, the best ROI comes from combining solar + battery.

What size battery do I need?

This depends on your electricity usage, solar panel output, and budget. Most UK homes benefit from 8-15kWh of storage. We’ll calculate the optimal size during your free survey.

Energy Storage Terminology – What You Need to Know

Usable Capacity

Capacity is quoted in kWh (kilowatt-hours) of storage power. Batteries do not fully discharge to ensure there’s no damage caused to the battery cells. Usable capacity is the practical amount of power your battery will deliver to your home.

Example: A 10kWh battery with 90% depth of discharge provides 9kWh of usable power.

Power Output

Power output is the amount of power (measured in kW) that can be delivered at any one time. It is the rate at which the battery will discharge. This is important to know to avoid drawing power from the grid during periods of heavy usage.

Example: A 5kW power output can run a kettle (3kW), oven (2kW), and lights simultaneously without grid support.

Cycles

A cycle is one complete discharge of the battery from 100% to 0% (or the usable capacity range). This is linked to the warranty period, which is usually quoted in years and/or number of cycles.

Example: 6,000 cycles at 90% depth of discharge = approximately 15+ years of daily use.

Battery Technology

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) – The safest and most stable battery chemistry available. All our recommended batteries use LFP technology for maximum safety and longevity.

Lithium Ion (NMC) – Higher energy density but less stable. Tesla Powerwall 2 uses this chemistry.

Lead Acid – Older technology with lower depth of discharge, shorter lifespan, but lower upfront cost. Rarely used in modern installations.

Depth of Discharge (DoD)

The percentage of battery capacity that can be safely used. Modern LFP batteries typically offer 90-100% depth of discharge, meaning you can use almost all the stored energy.

Why it matters: A 10kWh battery with 90% DoD gives you 9kWh of usable energy. One with 50% DoD only gives you 5kWh.
